About

I'm not a big fan of social networks. I'm a big believer in keeping things to yourself, privacy is important, it makes things special. However, I'm a huge literature fan. I'm always reading! And lately, I've discovered that I have too many ideas about books I've read that I can't share with anybody in real life. And it is not until I've put those ideas into sentences and paragraphs that I can continue successfully with my life. So, it's OK if no one reads this, and it's OK if someone reads and comments on this. What I'm trying to do is to get rid of some of my ideas :) Book recommendations are well received!

Well, it's been a long time since I last posted something here. I've been busy, but let's get down to business!

Before I start, though... As usual:

Title: Love Letters to the Dead

Author:  Ava Dellaira
Date of Publication: April 1st, 2014
Synopsis: "Laurel chooses Kurt Cobain because her sister, May, loved him. And he died young, just like May. Soon, Laurel has a notebook full of letters to the dead—to people like Janis Joplin, Heath Ledger, Amelia Earhart, and Amy Winehouse—though she never gives a single one of them to her teacher. She writes about starting high school, navigating the choppy waters of new friendships, learning to live with her splintering family, falling in love for the first time, and, most important, trying to grieve for May. But how do you mourn for someone you haven't forgiven?
It's not until Laurel has written the truth about what happened to herself that she can finally accept what happened to May. And only when Laurel has begun to see her sister as the person she was—lovely and amazing and deeply flawed—can she truly start to discover her own path.
" [From Goodreads]

I read Love Letters do the Dead because a friend recommended it to me on Goodreads. And it was my kind of book. But the thing is that Laurel is way too whiny for my taste. I get that your sister died and that you feel guilty about it, but jeez look for help!
And after I knew what had happened to May I just got angry! She was so selfish and immature, Laurel didn't deserve to go through everything she went through.
So, yeah, not my favorite. Also there was this very annoying metaphor:
"May was a real moon who everyone flocked to. Bu even if I am only Sky's street lamp, I don't mind."
Right, so one's a moon, the other one's a lamp *facepalm*

Title: Landline
Author:  Rainbow Rowell
Date of Publication: July 8th, 2014
Synopsis: "Georgie McCool knows her marriage is in trouble; it has been in trouble for a long time. She still loves her husband, Neal, and Neal still loves her, deeply — but that almost seems beside the point now.
Maybe that was always beside the point.
Two days before they’re supposed to visit Neal’s family in Omaha for Christmas, Georgie tells Neal that she can’t go. She’s a TV writer, and something’s come up on her show; she has to stay in Los Angeles. She knows that Neal will be upset with her — Neal is always a little upset with Georgie — but she doesn't expect him to pack up the kids and go home without her.
When her husband and the kids leave for the airport, Georgie wonders if she’s finally done it. If she’s ruined everything.
That night, Georgie discovers a way to communicate with Neal in the past. It’s not time travel, not exactly, but she feels like she’s been given an opportunity to fix her marriage before it starts...
Is that what she’s supposed to do?
Or would Georgie and Neal be better off if their marriage never happened?
" [From Goodreads]

Landline was one of my birthday gifts this year. A good friend from work gave it to me; she was kinda freaking out thinking that I might have (read) this one already! Luckily for her, I hadn't bought it yet. I loved Rainbow Rowell's Eleanor & Park (which I read again a couple of weeks ago, well actually I listened to it), so I wanted to get Landline, Fangirl and Attachments. I started reading it as soon as I got it.
I really liked it, though I've read really bad reviews on the internet... I liked the touch of magic (that was it, right? Magic? with the phone and everything?) she added to it. I enjoyed the flashback to how they met and I was just waiting for that kind of ending.
Georgie pissed me off a couple of times! She was just so... ugh, what's the word?? She just didn't care! Also, her friend made me mad (what was his name?). But when you make mistakes, when you have been living your life (or part of it) as a mistake, realizing it and fighting to make it right feels great.
I still need to read Rowell's books, but I think she's one of my faves :)

Favorite character: I liked Georgie... and her girls!
Favorite part: When the puppies are born :P The whole thing about Georgie's sister and the pizza "boy" and obviously when she goes to Neal
Favorite quote"I love you more than I hate everything else."
Least favorite character: I didn't hate anybody, I think... Maybe Georgie was a little too annoying or stupid at times
Least favorite part: The times she thought that everything was lost.

Would I read it again? Yeah!

Title: Struck by Lighting: The Carson Phillips Journal
Author:  Chris Colfer
Date of Publication: November 5th, 2013
Synopsis: "Struck By Lightning: The Carson Phillips Journal follows the story of outcast high school senior Carson Phillips who blackmails the most popular students in his school into contributing to his literary journal to bolster his college application; his goal in life is to get into Northwestern and eventually become the editor of The New Yorker.
At once laugh-out-loud funny, deliciously dark, and remarkably smart,
Struck By Lightning unearths the dirt that lies just below the surface of high school." [From Goodreads]

I bought this because I wanted to read it. I wanted to read it because I love Chris. I love Chris because I loved Glee. But this was a big disappointment. It is not that I didn't like it, it was more that I had really, really high expectations and it turned out to be so cliché.
Carson was more than sarcastic, he was mean! Look, I usually hate everybody around me. I hated my HS and university classmates throughout the years, but he could be horrible at times (and out-loud-horrible!). Well, maybe I identified myself a little bit with the character, but still... I don't tell people that I hate them right out front! That was one of the things I didn't enjoy.
I wonder if I was the only who thought Carson was gay. I think it was because of Chris, but it was difficult to picture him as a straight boy after thinking he was gay :S
Also, I totally get that he wants to reach his goal, but blackmailing? It's just, I don't know... it was like I was reading something I had watched on TV before.
He was miserable and didn't let anybody in. At the end, I don't think anybody appreciated what he had achieved... also, wtf with that ending?!
Anyway... I rated it 3 stars because it had fun parts, and it was Chris... No, I can't be unbiased :( sorry! Alright, what about that part with Emilio?! LOL, it was so funny! His piece for the journal was hilarious. I liked the relationship he had with his grandma, but hated the way he behaved with his mom.
There's nothing else I remember from this...

I've read many comments saying the movie's better. I'll have to watch it!!

Rating:
Favorite character: Hmm... Carson? Malerie?
Favorite part: There was this part were he talked to the cheerleader and he understood her, he even said thanks and stuff... I liked that
scene.
Favorite quote"Like having a great idea, life comes at you fast. It hits you and tries to escape and be expressed in any way possible. In a way, it's a lot like...lightning."
Least favorite character: Carson, at times
Least favorite part:
Ugh, every time he was a pain in the ass!
Would I read it again? I don't know. Maybe???

Title: A Game of Thrones

Author:  George R. R. Martin
Date of Publication: August 6th, 1996
Synopsis: "In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. The cold is returning, and in the frozen wastes of the north of Winterfell, sinister and supernatural forces are massing beyond the kingdom's protective Wall. At the center of the conflict lie the Starks of Winterfell, a family as harsh and unyielding as the land they were born to. Sweeping from a land of brutal cold to a distant summertime kingdom of epicurean plenty, here is a tale of lords and ladies, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and bastards, who come together in a time of grim omens. Amid plots and counterplots, tragedy and betrayal, victory and terror, the fate of the Starks, their allies, and their enemies hangs perilously in the balance, as each endeavors to win that deadliest of conflicts: the game of thrones." [From Goodreads]
This book took me by surprise and blew my mind! Whoa! I didn't really expect that!
replygif.net ...my fave gif website, btw
My best friend took me to the library on my birthday and told me to choose one. You have no idea (or probably you do) how difficult it was to pick one! But there it was... a blue book that I had thought about. I chose this book knowing that I would have to read it because it was a present. Honestly, fantasy isn't my thing... but oh well! There's so much fuzz about it with the TV show that I decided to read it (so that I could watch the series... so far I've seen the incredible amount of 1 episode :P).
I started reading and it was kinda slow, not the book, but my progress.
I loved the fact that it has each chapter from a different perspective. However, I dreaded Ned's chapters... so boring! They were the ones were most things happened, but omg! It took me so long to finish them. My favorites were Jon, Arya and Danny! Those are my favorite characters too. I love Tyrion, as well (but not as much). I spend my life on the internet (silently, but I do), and I know a lot of spoilers (damn you, 9gag!!!), so I know a lot of  people have died, but reading the book is awesome!
I was fascinated by the map the book has at the beginning! I love it when books have the map of their lands :3 Also, the index at the end with the whole list of families: AWESOME!
I have to say that there were really cruel parts, which were not my cup of tea, but still. Just to give you an example: I didn't particularly enjoy eating my yogurt while Daenerys was eating a heart *gross*
I already got the second book, A Clash of Kings, but haven't had time to sit and read it. Will do soon, though :D

Rating:
Favorite character: Jon and Arya!!! I just loved both of them! Tyrion was really funny!!
Favorite part: I think my favorite part was realizing that I was enjoying the book! It has too many good parts :)
Favorite quote"The things we love destroy us every time, lad. Remember that."
Least favorite character: Sansa! I hated her with all my heart! Also, the Lannisters (except Tyrion) were pretty shitty, especially Joffrey (that little asshole!)
Least favorite part:
I hated when Eddard and Drogo died. Also, poor Bran (he's not my favorite, but still...)
Would I read it again? When I finish the series... yes, this is a book I'll definitely reread!!

Title: Mariposas bajo la piel (When I Say Goodbye: A Book About Living)

Author:  Susan Spencer-Wendel
Date of Publication: 2012
Synopsis: "In June 2011, Susan Spencer-Wendel learned she had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)--Lou Gehrig's disease--an irreversible condition that systematically destroys the nerves that power the muscles. She was forty-four years old, with a devoted husband and three young children, and she had only one year of health remaining.
Susan decided to live that year with joy." [From Goodreads]

I read it in Spanish because the book was like 70% off a couple of months ago so I got it :) (I'm a shopaholic when it comes to books). I had absolutely no idea what it was about (a couple of weeks ago I saw it in the self-help shelf... ooook?), I just liked the title. If you translate the Spanish is something like "butterflies under the skin." Yeah, it doesn't sound so catchy that way, but in Spanish is pretty.
I started reading it because I wanted to read something easy (after Game of Thrones), so I decided to read something in my language. Once I started I realized it was gonna be a sad book :(
This is the story of a woman with ALS and her journey from the moment she finds out she has that disease until the end of her days. I liked her positivism, she was always strong in spirit even when her body was not. It was the kind of book that puts your life in perspective (and there I was, trying to find something 'light' to read).
However! The Spanish edition was just terrible! I am sure then original was better. Some times it was difficult to get what it was being said (Spanish from Spain... does that sound weird? Well, the Spanish that is spoken in Spain is different than in Costa Rica, obviously. And we're not so used to it, so...).
And OMG, don't get me started on the half dozen typos I found. They drove me crazy!
There were also many parts that were repetitive... Like she kept going back to things she had already said, and I wasn't sure why she was saying that again.
I feel terrible for giving it such low rating, you know... But it is not that I didn't like the story. I did. I admire her and her husband, and it was touching and sad and it makes you value what you have and who you are. But I didn't like the way the story was told. Maybe (maybe) it was because it was in Spanish...

Rating:
Favorite character: Susan. She truly was an inspiration... she had too much to lose (and she did), but she never stopped fighting.
Favorite part: The trips with her children. But also when she said all her husband did for her. Oh, and when she spent time with her real mother.
Favorite quote"“Fearing the possible is no way to live."
Least favorite part: When she started noticing she couldn't do certain things.
Would I read it again? I might try it in English... but not any time soon.
Okie dokie... that's all for now. I still need to review a couple more books, but that'll have to be another day :D
Enjoy your reading!
