About

I'm not a big fan of social networks. I'm a big believer in keeping things to yourself, privacy is important, it makes things special. However, I'm a huge literature fan. I'm always reading! And lately, I've discovered that I have too many ideas about books I've read that I can't share with anybody in real life. And it is not until I've put those ideas into sentences and paragraphs that I can continue successfully with my life. So, it's OK if no one reads this, and it's OK if someone reads and comments on this. What I'm trying to do is to get rid of some of my ideas :) Book recommendations are well received!

Hello again! I'm back with my review of the books I've read in 2014 :)

Looking for Alaska by John GreenLooking For Alaska - John Green

Rating: ★★★★★
Favorite character: Pudge
Favorite secondary characterThe Colonel
Favorite part: I love Alaska's story about how she chose her name. Also, the greatest prank ;)
Favorite quote: "
I wanted so badly to lie down next to her on the couch, to wrap my arms around her and sleep. Not fuck, like in those movies. Not even have sex. Just sleep together in the most innocent sense of the phrase. But I lacked the courage and she had a boyfriend and I was gawky and she was gorgeous and I was hopelessly boring and she was endlessly fascinating. So I walked back to my room and collapsed on the bottom bunk, thinking that if people were rain, I was drizzle and she was hurricane."
Least favorite character: I like them all, I guess.
Least favorite part: When Pudge and the Colonel try to figure out what happened to Alaska.

Would I read it again? I've read it twice before, so yes.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Behind the Beautiful Forevers by Katherine Boo Behind the Beautiful Forevers - Katherine Boo

Rating: ★★★★
Favorite character: Abdul
Favorite secondary characterManju
Favorite part: As a whole, I think the fact that Boo is a journalist and got to 'report' the situation as a story is great. It is a really sad book, you really get that it is real, but her story-telling skills are amazing! Also, I loved the part when
Favorite quote: "
As every slumdweller knew, there were three main ways out of poverty: finding an entrepreneurial niche, as the Husains had found in garbage; politics and corruption, in which Asha placed her hopes; and education."
Least favorite character: Asha and Fatima... ugh, they made me so mad!
Least favorite part: All the deaths.
Would I read it again? Maybe. I read this one because it was one of the Nerdfighters book club choice.

 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell Eleanor & Park - Rainbow Rowell

Rating: ★★★★★
Favorite character: Eleanor
Favorite secondary characterPark
Favorite part: Many, but I think one of my very favorite is when he starts giving her comic books in the bus.
Favorite quote: "
You saved me life, she tried to tell him. Not forever, not for good. Probably just temporarily. But you saved my life, and now I'm yours. The me that's me right now is yours. Always."
Least favorite character: Eleanor's mother. Ugh, so irritating!
Least favorite part: When she left!!! :'(
Would I read it again? YES!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone (HP #1) - J.K. Rowling

Rating: ★★★★
Favorite character: Hermione
Favorite secondary character
Ron
Favorite part: Invisibility cloak!!! Seriously, though... where can I get one?
Favorite quote: "
Always use the proper name for things. Fear of a name increases fear of the thing itself."
Least favorite character: Draco Malfoy
Would I read it again? Probably, but I need to finish the rest of the series first.

He's the reason I read the first HP book...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just One Day by Gayle Forman Just One Day - Gayle Forman

Rating: ★★★★
Favorite character: Allyson (except when she was a zombie)
Favorite secondary character:
Hmmm... Dee. I feel tempted to say Willem, because he was pretty cool and even though I hated him, it was.not.his.fault... apparently :P But I'll go with Dee because he was real and he helped Allyson a lot!
Favorite part: That part during the dinner with her family in Miami (I think it was Miami) when she told them she was going on a trip to Europe and everybody freaks out! And then when she starts working at that restaurant... and obviously when she goes back to Europe and meets the shy girl in France and sees her again in Amsterdam. Lots of favorite parts, I guess.
Favorite quote: "There is a world of difference, Lulu, between falling in love and being in love."
#2 "And that's when I understand that I have been stained. Whether I'm still in love with him, whether he was ever in love with me, and no matter who he's in love with now, Willem changed my life. He showed me how to get lost, and the I showed myself how to get found."
Least favorite character: I don't know... I guess it would have to be Celine (I think that was the French girl...) But not so much. And for a while it was Willem, but not anymore.
Least favorite part: I think that boring part when she was zombified during her first semester at the university...
Would I read it again? Of course! I got Just One Year so I have to reread JOD :)
 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Stand by Stephen King The Stand - Stephen King

Rating: ★★★★
Favorite character:
Stuart Redman. Since the beginning he was the one I liked ;)
Favorite secondary character:
Nick, he's just so sweet and smart!
Favorite part:
At the end, Stu's journey back to Free zone with Tom Cullen (M-O-O-N, that spells Tom Cullen... Laws yes! LOL)
Favorite quote
I have two this time: “That wasn't any act of God. That was an act of pure human fuckery.”
“God doesn't bribe, child. He just makes a sign and lets people take it as they will.”

Least favorite character:
Harold. There is no doubt about it. He was nastier than Flaggs, for fuck's sake! Just despicable. I really don't understand how he did what he did. He did deserve to die the way he did!!!
Least favorite part:
Well, how about every time one of the good ones died?! Larry, Nick, the Judge... Terrible... all of their deaths. Also, all of the gross parts with dead people (eek :S)

Would I read it again? It took me like 8 months to read it... so I don't think so. Also, I have like 40 more Stephen King books to read.

 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak The Book Thief - Markus Zusak

Rating: ★★★★
Favorite character: Max (?) ...OK, it was a tie between Max and Liesel.
Favorite secondary character:
Hans. He's just so sweet, I loved the way he would stay up all night with Liesel when she got her nightmares.
Favorite part: I think that when she becomes friends with Max is my favorite part. They are very similar and the way they help each other is very  nice.
Favorite quote: I guess humans like to watch a little destruction. Sand castles, houses of cards, that's where they begin. Their great skill is their capacity to escalate.
Least favorite character:
The Führer , obviously.
Least favorite part:
After the bombs hit Himmel Street, and Liesel finds Rudy and kisses him. That part was heart-breaking. Also, right after that when she finds Hans and Rosa :'(

Would I read it again? In a couple of years, maybe.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold The Lovely Bones - Alice Seabold

Rating: ★★
Favorite character:
Susie, I guess...
Favorite secondary character:
Lindsey
Favorite part:
I liked the part when Lindsey goes into Mr. Harvey's house to get evidence. She does it for her father and it is so brave (that was a very tense part during the movie!). And at the end it is what causes Mr. Harvey to leave, which is better than him being there and the police doing nothing!
Favorite quote:
Murderers are not monsters, they're men. And that's the most frightening thing about them.
Least favorite character:
Mr. Harvey. He's despicable... how many girls did he kill?! And for what?! I was happy when he died :P
Least favorite part:
Well, of course all the first chapter is horrible!!! But also when Susie starts discovering in Heaven all of the girls that Mr. Harvey had killed.

Would I read it again? NO! but I could watch the movie again (Stanley Tucci *wink wink*)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6738272 Heart-Shaped Box - Joe Hill

Rating: ★★★★
Favorite character: Jude
Favorite secondary characterAngus and Bon, the dogs!!!!!
Favorite part: The trip to Florida. Oh, and the ending!
Favorite quote: "
He understood that the ghost existed first and foremost within his own head. That maybe ghosts always haunted minds, not places."
Least favorite character: A tie between Craddock and Jessica.
Least favorite part: Aside from the scary parts, I think the almost-ending, when they have all this light and stuff and the magical door swallows Craddock.
Would I read it again? I would prefer reading Horns again...
 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman The Ocean at the End of the Lane - Neil Gaiman

Rating: ★★★★★
Favorite character: Lettie Hempstock
Favorite secondary characterThe rest of the Hempstock family
Favorite part: I liked a lot of different parts throughout the novel, but the ending is shocking and amazing!
Favorite quote: "I liked that. Books were safer than other people anyway."
"Nobody actually looks like what they really are on the inside. You don't. People are much more complicated than that. It's true for everybody"
Least favorite character: Ursula
Least favorite part:When his family didn't believe him about Ursula!!
Would I read it again? A big, fat YES!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Jane Austen Book Club by Karen Joy Fowler The Jane Austen Book Club - Karen Joy Fowler

Rating: ★★★
Favorite character: Grigg!!
Favorite secondary characterAllegra
Favorite part: So different from the movie from which I have tons of favorite parts (Hugh Dancy!). I can't really recall any from the book. What a disappointment.
Favorite quote"Love at first sigh was as ridiculous as it was irresistible."
Least favorite character: Prudie
Least favorite part: All of the times when they were talking about the past, like in a flashback or something, and I didn't really get it because the narrator was freaking confusing!
Would I read it againNope, but I want to watch the movie again!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rating: ★★★
Favorite character: Ishmael/narrator

If you're alive, then there is hope for a better day and something good to happen. If there is nothing good left in the destiny of a person, he or she will die."
Least favorite part: The time that he actually was a soldier and when he left his uncle's house.
Would I read it again? Maaaybe? Not a big fan of memoirs...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Me Before You by Jojo Moyes Me Before You - Jojo Moyes

Rating: ★★★
Favorite character: Lou
Favorite secondary character
Will Traynor
Favorite part:
When she starts planning his trips and adventures (with the little calendar)
Favorite quote:
"Some mistakes... Just have greater consequences than others. But you don't have to let the result of one mistake be the thing that defines you. You, Clark, have the choice not to let that happen."
Least favorite character:
Oh God, the sister!
Least favorite part:
Last time she sees him :( and the letter.

Would I read it again? I don't know. For me, the ending saved the book, that's the main reason I gave it three stars (would've given it one if it had ended up the way I thought it would), so I don't know how knowing the ending would impact in the rest of the story...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie PerkinsAnna and the French Kiss (Anna and the French Kiss #1) - Stephanie Perkins

Rating: ★★★★★
Favorite character: Anna and Etienne (again, don't make me choose!)
Favorite secondary characterJosh
Favorite part: Knowing now what happens at the almost-end of Isla and the Happily Ever After *fangirling dangerously* But from this book... when Etienne goes to the top of that high building to talk to her <3
Favorite quote:
"Is it possible for home to be a person and not a place?"
Least favorite character: Ellie and Bridgette (*puking all over the place*)
Least favorite part: When Anna finds out about Bridgette and Toph and when she and Etienne kiss and the others see them and get mad at Anna :S

Rating: ★★★★
Favorite character: Hermoine and Ron
Favorite secondary character: Harry (?)
Favorite part: When Harry thought he was going to be held responsible for Dumbledore's phoenix's death... hilarious! :P
Favorite quote:
“But why’s she got to go to the library?”
“Because that’s what Hermione does,” said Ron, shrugging. “When in doubt, go to the library.”

Least favorite character: The Dursleys (omg) and the annoying Gilderoy!
Would I read it again? I'll see...

Favorite secondary character:
Yeah... I don't really remember the names of all the women who were nice to her while she was in  Danbury... and no, I'm not going to say Larry (he seems too good to be true :P)
Favorite part:
Obviously when she goes home!!!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Breakfast at Tiffany's by Truman CapoteBreakfast at Tiffany's - Truman Capote

Rating: ★★★
Favorite character:
Fred/narrator
Favorite part:
I'm so confused between the movie and the book, that I'm pretty sure whatever I type here will refer to the movie and not the book
Favorite quote:
"Holly Golightly: You know the days when you get the mean reds?
Paul Varjak: The mean reds. You mean like the blues?
Holly Golightly: No. The blues are because you’re getting fat, and maybe it’s been raining too long. You’re just sad, that’s all. The mean reds are horrible. Suddenly you’re afraid, and you don’t know what you’re afraid of. Do you ever get that feeling?
"
Least favorite character:
Holly Golightly
Least favorite part:
...
Would I read it again? Nope. Reason: the movie is better.

Favorite quote:
"There's a difference between really loving someone and loving the idea of her."
Least favorite character:

Least favorite character:
Thorin's not my cup of tea. Also, the ugly wargs
Least favorite part:
When Bilbo is told that Fili and Kili died :(
